Art on 27.2.15

The highlight of this week for many children in Room 13 (17) was probably doing their self-portraits.
On Wednesday afternoon they did some drafts of these and were free to take them home to show you.
On Thursday the children began their Who am I? descriptions of themselves to accompany their self-portraits. They finished publishing their writing on Friday.

First they sketched their face, neck and shoulders using pencil. Next they used a black crayon to outline their facial features. Some of these were highlighted with coloured crayon. Lastly they dyed over their pictures.
Here are some of the finished products. Don't they look amazing?!

Swimming over these past three weeks 20.2.15

Today we had our final session of swimming.
We began with a fun water safety activity rescuing our buddy using a noodle.

We also did a few fun class activities like making waves, swimming through the waves to
the other side, making whirlpools and swimming through hoops.

We finished off with a race involving a buddy and two noodles entwined like a chain.

Over the three weeks of swimming many children have gained in water confidence

and improved in their swimming skills. The middle group have been working on using a
streamlined body position when gliding on their backs.

The more confident swimmers have been working on breathing correctly when doing freestyle

by 'putting their ear on their arm' to take a breath.

This group of swimmers have also been working on learning the correct arm movements
   for backstroke swimming.

Inquiry learning on 13.2.15

Our inquiry topic this term is to do with the concept of diversity and the context in which the Koru      Team children are learning is about groups that we belong to.

We introduced our big idea in Room 13 on Friday by finding out what the children understand
by the question "What is a group?"
I was impressed with some of the definitions that they shared...

We then went on to talk about what groups the children could be put into within our class.
These are a few of the ideas that we came up with:

This will lead us onto carrying out some authentic statistical investigations in Maths over the next
several days, including displaying our class data on each of these ideas and coming up with some
shared class statements that we can draw from each data display.

School Picnic: I'm looking forward to meeting Room 13 parents and children informally at our picnic
this Wednesday 18 February. This will be a chance for you to catch up with other parents too and
for the children to join with some games after tea. There will also be an opportunity for you to visit
our classroom with your child. See you then!

First library session on 5.2.15

During our first library session of the year it was great to see the children enjoying the books.

Library time is always a chance to relax with a friend over a good book or two...

...or sit quietly at one of the tables

...and get totally engrossed in a good book.
